Health.com recently published findings from a new study highlighting how women in perimenopause often experience extreme exhaustion, with heavy menstrual bleeding being a key contributor. The research reveals that women who have heavier or longer periods leading up to menopause are significantly more likely to feel fatigued.
For many women, abnormal uterine bleeding during perimenopause could be an indication of an underlying condition such as uterine fibroids. Fibroids, which are noncancerous growths in the uterus, are a common cause of heavy menstrual bleeding. Research suggests that up to 30% of perimenopausal women experience significant blood loss, and those with fibroids are particularly vulnerable to prolonged or excessive bleeding.
The study found that reporting at least three episodes of heavy menstrual bleeding within six months was linked to a 44% to 62% increased likelihood of feeling fatigued. Additionally, experiencing prolonged menstrual bleeding in the same timeframe was associated with a lower chance of feeling energized. These findings emphasize the need for greater awareness of how fibroids and other gynecological conditions impact women’s overall well-being during the menopause transition.
Heavy bleeding can also lead to anemia, a condition where the body lacks enough red blood cells to transport oxygen efficiently. Anemia, combined with common perimenopausal symptoms like night sweats and sleep disruptions, can intensify feelings of exhaustion. Unfortunately, many women assume their symptoms are just part of aging rather than seeking medical intervention.
