New Study Links Soda to Severe Menstrual Cramps

October 17,2024

Very Well Health recently reported on a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports that suggests a connection between drinking soda and experiencing severe menstrual cramps. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 2,000 female college students in China and found that those who consumed more soda were significantly more likely to suffer from painful periods.

The study’s findings have sparked discussions about the potential triggers for menstrual cramps and the role that dietary factors may play in worsening symptoms. While the exact mechanisms behind this connection are still being investigated, experts believe that caffeine and sugar content in soda may contribute to increased pain.

Key findings from the study include:

  • Individuals who drank soda had a 24% higher chance of experiencing menstrual cramps compared to non-soda drinkers.
  • For students in rural areas, the odds increased to 40.2%.
  • As soda consumption increased, so did the severity of menstrual cramps.

While the study focused on women in China, experts say the findings are likely applicable to women in other regions as well. However, further research is needed to confirm this connection and explore the underlying reasoning.

If you’re experiencing severe menstrual cramps, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying medical conditions and discuss potential treatment options. Over the counter pain relievers may provide relief for mild to moderate symptoms, but for more severe cases, additional interventions may be necessary.
